This is a difficult, yet rewarding show, as the protagonist is a deluded narcissist, and it isn't fun spending time in her company, especially in the first half, when she is in peak-arrogance mode. On the other hand, she chastens a little in the second half, the performances are superlative, and the show has something useful to say about what kind of endeavours make for a worthwhile existence. :)

Queen of the Mist is best described as a niche musical. I enjoyed it and am glad I went. I would not pay to see it again. A small cast who were excellent. They had fantastic voices - but the singing style of the lead character was more operatic than I would have liked. I could hear every word - but found it hard to understand what she was singing even though it was in English! Not such an issue with others in the cast suggesting it was her voice not the acoustics. Since most of the story is sung it made following the story problematic at times. Since it was based on a real person I knew the story being told. My children, who were not familiar with her life, were completely lost at times. I found I had to explain large chunks of the second half to them on the way home. I am still glad they were with me as it is in a charming, small theatre which suited the stripped back production perfectly. A great antidote to more overblown musicals in the West End. My children enjoyed the show too, even though explanations were needed. Overall, definitely worth seeing, but read up on Annie Edson Taylor first.
