Manchild: 8 West End Characters Who Totally Deserve That Title

Sabrina Carpenter just delivered the anthem we didn’t know we needed with her latest single, “Manchild”. There’s something endlessly entertaining (and exhausting) about a character with ‘manchild’ energy. We’ve all encountered the type and make no mistake - this isn’t just about the boys. We’re talking about anyone who avoids accountability, lives in delusion, or makes mess after mess and calls it a personality trait.

From emotionally stunted boyfriends to full-on delusional divas, here are 8 West End characters who absolutely deserve to be dragged by a glittery, theatrical rendition of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild”.

1. Nate - The Devil Wears Prada

Nate: the culinary boyfriend who made being mildly supportive seem like a full-time job. While Andy fights it out in the cutthroat world of Runway, becoming the ultimate ‘Miranda Girl’, Nate throws guilt trips instead of dinner parties. He pouts when she prioritises her job, acts like she’s changed because she has ambition, and somehow still believes he’s the victim.

2. Mr. Wormwood - Matilda

If being petty, self-absorbed and allergic to growth isn’t manchild energy, we don’t know what is. Mr. Wormwood is a grown man who throws tantrums when challenged, bullies his own daughter for being smart, and lies to everyone with the confidence only a used-car salesman could muster.

Every single time he appears, he lowers the collective IQ on the stage. He’s far more interested in scams than parenting, and treats Matilda’s brilliance like a personal attack. Matilda may sing about growing up and being brave enough to fight the creatures underneath the bed, but it’s Mr Wormwood, the so-called grown-up, who’s the creature in question.

3. Daisy Buchanan - The Great Gatsby

Don’t let the flapper fashion and soft voice fool you: Daisy might just be the most emotionally immature person in West End musical theatre. She runs from consequences, lets others clean up her mess, and hides behind helplessness. The girl is chaos in pearls.

Daisy may not mean to be cruel, but she is. She plays with Gatsby’s heart while staying safe in her privileged world, retreating the second things get messy. Like many manchildren, she lets other people pay the emotional bill for her mistakes, never lifting a finger.

The Full Song Breakdown of Elton John’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Musical

As this comedic fashion sensation continues to dominate London’s West End, let's delve into Elton John’s stunning contributions to the stage adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada.

The Devil Wears Prada Act I songs

I Mean Business

Andy Sachs, fresh from university and chasing her dream of writing for The New Yorker, lands one final try - an interview with Runway’s publishers, Elias‑Clarke. This opening number captures her nervous ambition and determination, while setting in place the New York city backdrop.

House of Miranda

Although Andy initially doesn’t know of her future boss, this song introduces Miranda Priestley’s formidable reputation, and more importantly, her iconic dismissal: "That’s all."

I Only Love You for Your Body

Here, Nate reassures Andy in a lighthearted duet that celebrates her beauty - independent of Runway’s runway-perfect models.

How to Survive at Runway

Emily, Miranda’s veteran assistant, confronts Andy with the brutal realities of their workplace. The fast-paced lyrics offer tongue-in-cheek survival tips: "Eat, sleep, and breathe the job - just don’t sleep or eat."

Girl for the Job

As deadlines mount, this song gives us an introspective look at Andy as she asks herself whether she can survive and thrive in this fiercely demanding environment.

Dress Your Way Up

Nigel steps in as fashion mentor during this iconic makeover scene. His gentle, wittily delivered advice sparks Andy’s transformation through style.

The Devil Wears Prada

At Runway’s grand gala, Miranda tempts Andy with a career-defining offer: the chance to work at Paris Fashion Week. It’ll look great on her CV, but are the personal costs with it? Here she must choose between ambition and loyalty, career and love.

Miranda Girl

Andy decides she’s ready to embrace the “Miranda girl” lifestyle, with all its power and sacrifice - a bold Act I finale that leaves her changed.

The Devil Wears Prada Characters

The Devil Wears Prada waltzed onto the West End catwalk in October 2024 and instantly became a hit, captivating fans of the iconic film as well as newcomers unfamiliar with its haute couture world. The musical follows Andy, who lands a job at one of the most prestigious fashion magazines and must navigate a world filled with glitz, glamour, and Chanel. Whether you're already obsessed or just discovering this dazzling show, read on to meet the characters who are truly dressing to impress in this fashionable phenomenon.

Miranda Priestly

Miranda Priestly. That’s all. This fashion powerhouse could intimidate even the most confident with her icy exterior and unapologetic diva attitude. As the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway, Miranda is the ultimate fashionable puppet master, pulling strings, shaping careers, and controlling the fashion world with a single glance. Her influence is pivotal in Andy’s transformation and rise in the industry. Taking on the iconic role in the West End production is the legendary Vanessa Williams, whose acclaimed career spans both Broadway and the West End.

Andy

Andy enters the world of fashion with little expectation of the whirlwind she’s about to face. Her innocence and naivety are quickly disrupted as she becomes hungry for the journalism career she's fighting for. Slowly, the world around her and the people (and handbags) in it begin to influence her, changing the life she once knew. Her relationship with her boss, Miranda, shifts over time from struggling to understand this new world to ultimately becoming one of Miranda’s biggest allies.

Runway? No. Vanessa Williams is staying!

It may have been Vanessa Williams' birthday this week, but she is treating us to the best gift we could hope for - she will be continuing her role as Miranda Priestly until 18 October 2025! This extension follows the show's remarkable success, having become the fastest-selling production in the history of the Dominion Theatre.

In celebration of this milestone, the production is hosting a special "Florals for Spring" gala night, playfully nodding to Miranda Priestly's iconic line. This event promises an evening of elegance and style, fit for the cover of Runway magazine. In December of last year, the show officially opened with a special gala night which raised over £750,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundationand was attended by guests including Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Lily Collins, Edward Enninful, Bob Geldof, Graham Norton, Zandra Rhodes, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Elizabeth Hurley, and many more.

The Devil Wears Prada Musical, featuring music composed by Elton John, brings to life the story of Andy Sachs (Georgie Buckland), an aspiring journalist who lands a job at the prestigious Runway magazine. Under the demanding eye of editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, Andy navigates the glamorous yet challenging world of fashion, discovering the personal costs of success and ambition.

A Million Girls Would Kill for This: Meet The Devil Wears Prada West End Cast

Never before have we witnessed such a collision of the West End and the world of high fashion, as when The Devil Wears Prada strutted onto the Dominion stage. With powerhouse creative forces behind it - including Elton John composing the score - expectations for the cast of this West End premiere are as sky-high as Miranda Priestly’s demands.

The casting for this musical has sparked major excitement since its announcement. Read on to meet the cast who are bringing the beloved movie and its infamously stylish characters onto the West End stage, one runway-worthy number at a time.

Who plays Miranda Priestly in the West End cast?

Vanessa Williams takes on the infamous Miranda Priestly in perhaps one of the most iconic casting decisions in West End history. With stage and screen accolades to her name including an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, what makes this casting especially apt is the fact that she portrayed one of television’s most fashionable villains of all time as Wilhelmina Slater (Ugly Betty). We can think of no-one better suited to step into Meryl Streep's stilettos as the ultimate diva.

Who plays Andy in the West End cast?

Georgie Buckland plays our ambitious and awkwardly loveable protagonist, Andy Sachs. Buckland was part of the original cast of Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks national tour, and has previously played Gingy in the UK and Ireland tour of Shrek the Musical. This role marks her West End debut, and what better way to make a West End entrance than to take on Anne Hathaway’s beloved Andy?

Who plays Emily in the West End cast?

Amy Di Bartolomeo plays the hilariously judgemental and blunt (pun intended) Emily. Having previously performed as Catherine of Aragon in SIX (West End), Di Bartolomeo is no stranger to exuding unapologetic sass. She was also part of the UK tour of We Will Rock You as Meat, world premiere of Bat Out of Hell and played Mirela in For Tonight in the West End.

Devil Wears Prada review from the Devil herself

Devil Wears Prada review from the Devil herself

You may be reading this with the misguided assumption that, because I am the star of the show, I would somehow be an ‘unreliable critic.’ Just like the rise of cowboy boots and cropped waistcoats, you are wrong. For who is more qualified to give an accurate assessment of the production, than someone who is an expert on the regurgitated material?

The 2024 musical, based on the 2006 film, based on the 2003 book, is based on my life! My word has far more authority than the theatre luvvies I found myself surrounded by. Who I would just like to take a minute to address -  just like your self-satisfied musings, the black sequin jackets you wear will never feature in Runway, or even Vogue. Please stop trying to ‘make it happen’, the plastic shining discs are quite distracting and offensive on the eye. Mercifully, I had Emily as a human shield. Her hideous bulky cardigan and heavy skirt blocked out the glare from the gaudy outerwear, and my sight was saved.

I used my unencumbered vision to cast an exacting eye on the offering presented to me. Housed in the Dominion Theatre, a quaint two thousand seat auditorium in the heart of the West End (which is to say the fringes of, as the heart is located on the left of the chest, not the dead centre) the originally titled The Devil Wears Prada the Musical officially had its grand opening. I was prepared to be wowed…

The musical opens with ‘Emily’ wading through the crowd to address the M&S-clad theatregoers. She sarcastically asks them if they have taken enough photos of the set, and berates those who are even thinking about opening sweets during the performance, however slowly. I couldn’t be more proud. I only wish the real Emily was as commanding as Miss Di Bartolomeo

Once my fellow audience members were rightly put in their place, and the smuggled snacks were coyly returned to their (one can only hope ‘free’) tote bags, the lights were dimmed and the musical began. What followed was a spectacle so thrilling, so engaging, so fabulous, that it rather reminded me of someone… me. And what could be higher praise than that?

The Devil Wears Prada Musical review: a model example of reinvention done right

The little black dress, created by CoCo Channel in 1926, has been a wardrobe must-have for almost 100 years. The simple staple has undergone countless transformations, alterations and adaptations to fit in with the modern woman’s wants and needs. An ever evolving art form, fashion takes inspiration from the past to propel itself forward, enthralling and exciting its audience in the process. The Devil Wears Prada Musical is a model example of reinvention done right.

Since its announcement in A/W 2023, The Devil Wears Prada Musical has been hotly tipped to be this season's must-see show, with tickets to the production flying off the (virtual shelves) faster than 2010’s Mulberry Alexa. And, much like the leather satchel, we can’t see this expertly crafted musical going out of fashion any time soon. It has the makings of a classic.

Starring Grammy nominee Vanessa Williams, alongside Olivier winner Matt Henry and Six royalty’s, Amy Di Bartolomeo. The fashion-forward musical has more stars than London Fashion Weeks FROW. And they shine more brightly than a Karen Millen Stretch Sequin Maxi Dress.

Vanessa Williams' grand entrance (elegantly rising from the depths of the Dominion Theatre to command centre stage) earned the longest, and loudest, round of applause I have ever experienced at the theatre. And it was well-earned. Since her first highly-anticipated appearance on stage, appearing fully formed and exactly where she needs to be, to her last, she demands attention. She doesn’t need a designer wardrobe and sequined ball gown to achieve this (though of course, she is decked in the most beautifully couture costumes designed by her friend and celebrity stylist, Pamella Roland), but she does so with a quiet authority.

Can you feel the lust tonight? 77 year-old singer, songwriter and pianist, Elton John, shamelessly flirts with moderator, Matt Hemley in front of husband David Furnish at The Devil Wears Prada launch.

Elton John has been smashing barriers and taboo subjects with a diamante baseball bat since 1975, so he’s no stranger to shocking audiences. The EGOT winner and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer has been at the forefront of the avant garde, wearing couture dresses long before Harry Styles graced the cover of Vogue in a Gucci floor length number.

Elton John reveals his favourite song, and it’s not Tiny Dancer, Candle in the Wind or Rocket Man

The Oscar winning icon revealed the song he is most proud of. And it wasn’t “Tiny Dancer”, “Candle in the Wind” or even “Rocket Man”.

Dominating the charts since 1968, Elton John’s discography contains eight number one albums and ten UK number one singles, including wedding favourites “Your Song” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. So, when he’s asked which of his songs he’s most proud of, he has a lot to choose from!

Many of the musician's songs from his six-decade long career appeared in the 2019 hit musical biopic ‘Rocketman.’ But it’s a stage musical that contains his favourite.
